Description

Prompt:

Across the globe, many individuals are fleeing violence, poverty, and corruption. However, climate change is emerging as both a direct and an indirect driver of migration that complicates existing vulnerabilities. What is the relationship between climate change and global patterns of migration? What is the role of the international community in protecting climate migrants? Use specific examples for the course readings and guest speakers to support your argument.

Some questions to think about:

(Note: These are guiding questions that you could use to frame your argument. You do not have to answer all, or any, of these if you are interested in another aspect of this situation)

  • How do diverse marginalized groups experience the effects of climate change differently? (immigrants, refugees, migrants, women, children, etc.)
  • In what ways are marginalized groups at greater risk to the harms of environmental changes?

Some possible sources to provide context:

(Note: These sources are to provide background information on the context of global migration. You may use other news sources to inform your argument. We are not asking you to summarize these articles)

Women and children are the most affected by ecological changes in developing countries
The debate on Climate change is heating up every passing day. Climate change causes
changes in the environment that affects every living creature on earth. It is for this reason that
everyone's attention has dramatically shifted to climate change. While climate change is gradual,
the impact is radical. A lot of lives get lost due to the changes in environmental conditions in
addition to migration that comes as a result. The most affected persons are the marginalized
groups who are limited in the options they have. In developing countries, the effects of climate
change are devastating and alarming, and Women and children are most affected by
environmental changes in those places. In this scrip, we shall discuss how women and children
are the most affected by ecological changes in developing countries.
Loss of biodiversity is having a lead to hardships for women in developing countries.
Diversity loss includes loss of plant species and animal species that play a critical role in the
maintaining of biodiversity (Massawe, Mayes & Cheng, 2016). Since environmental changes
result in the loss of species as a result of new harsh conditions for the organisms, the remaining
few species are at risk of being over-utilized. When species that are considered food no longer
naturally germinate in the environment, food scarcity emanates. This scarcity means that women
have to be a move to farther areas in search of alternative sources of food. Such movements
