Ewrt 2-73Z, Fall 2019 Final Essay Instructions Assignment Overview: It seems unlikely that anyone could read Harari’s book and agree with every opinion offered, so your last essay will be a six-page essay wherein you will argue that one of Harari’s assertions of opinion is wrong and explain why. This paper will be easiest to write if you find that assertion of an opinion by Harari with which you most vehemently disagreed when reading his book. You need to draw on at least five sources (of which Harari is one), in this essay. Required Readings: A close, annotated reading of that section of Harari’s book wherein the opinion you will challenge resides is a requisite starting point for an argumentation paper—and an analysis. You must know what he claims and what evidence he offers in support of the opinion. General Guidelines: This is to be an argumentation paper, not some personal screed. If you look closely, you will note that Harari precedes any statement of opinion with the reasons that led him to hold that opinion. While that doesn’t make him necessarily right, it does require you to support your own oppositional position with facts; certainly, your opinion matters, but it will be developed and proven by refuting his opinion—and possibly the evidence he offers in support of it with evidence that supports your own position. The first-person singular is not to be used in this paper. Note: (Your thesis sentence should not say “I disagree” with Harari . . . Your name is at the top of the paper, so who else’s opinion could you be offering? Your thesis needs to start with the subject, not you, but Harari’s opinion and then assert that it is incorrect and briefly say why. The subsequent body paragraphs will prove the truth of your thesis. Do keep in mind that one cannot argue with facts though one can argue with how facts are interpreted. Specifics: You are writing an argumentation paper, not a research paper. This means that your use of sources requires they be properly introduced and contextualized in a way that makes clear how that source material counters some aspect of Harari’s opinion. Suggestions: It is always easier to write a paper when one is invested in the subject. For that reason, you may wish to think about your own responses to what you have read and are reading. You are looking for a claim the author made that affected you in a visceral way, something he said that angered you, offended you. Moments such as these would suggest enough interest and investment to encourage your best efforts. Works Cited: Your works cited page will not count toward the six-page paper requirement, and it will have at least six sources listed, Harari and four other sources you use to support the case you wish to make. Your works cited page should follow the MLA conventions governing them, and your in-text citations should conform to MLA norms. There is a help file with a link to the most recent, 8th Edition of the MLA guidelines in the week’s module. Process: The most difficult component to writing a paper is getting started writing the paper. This is the reason that the first step to writing this essay is to submit the introduction to the essay you plan to write. The introduction is a homework assignment. You are also required to provide an analysis of that section of Harari’s book that contains the opinion you will be challenging, refuting. Finally: It bears repeating that I am not a mind reader. If there is any part of these instructions that are unclear, you need to ask for clarification. Argument Analysis ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW. An argument (in the sense we understand the term in this course) is not an angry discussion with raised voices and blood pressure. Nor is an argument merely a statement of opinion. A good argument contains evidence that its author understands the issue at hand and knows the opposition’s position. A person with a good argument makes well-supported points that are clearly connected to a larger discussion, and uses language and evidence fairly without making unwarranted claims or assumptions. Certainly, to be able to make sound arguments of one’s own, one needs to be able to dissect the arguments of others. This dissection is called argument analysis. GENERAL GUIDELINES. The summaries you have already begun to write are the beginnings of analysis. An analysis is titled and opens just as a summary does, with the title, the author’s name, and his or her main idea in the first sentence. Additionally, the first sentence should provide a sense of the argument’s overall quality and persuasiveness. An analysis offers an objective evaluation of the argument being made. That evaluation should include the following: • • • Identifying the writer’s tone and audience as these will often suggest the writer’s political or cultural position. Evaluating the argument’s overall persuasiveness and completeness. Analyzing the quality of supportive evidence. This includes noting any glaring or systemic logical fallacies or any unwarranted assumptions. OBJECTIVITY. Your analysis should not include any use of the first person (I, me, or my). Any disagreement with or critiques of the author’s work should be done in a civil tone absent of sarcasm, irony, or personal attack. (Criticism should be specific, not general.) A FINAL NOTE. In addition to being evaluated for standard academic English, an analysis’ grade is also based on evidence of a clear understanding of what the author is arguing, and how well or poorly that argument is supported and presented. Since the final essay requires you to offer a reasoned disagreement with an opinion offered by Harari, an analysis of that section of the text wherein that opinion resides will give you the chance to analyze Harari's thinking leading up to the specific opinion offered. If done well, elements of your analysis could be incorporated directly into your final essay.
