ASSIGNMENT 2: CASE STUDY Part 1: Due Week 7 and Part 2: Due Week 10 "A good leader…is someone who has energy, can articulate a vision and inspire others to perform, makes the tough decisions, has the skill to deliver, and never fails to deliver the financials." Jack Welch Leadership comes with many challenges. You need to motivate, inspire and encourage your teams to work toward common goals. This assignment offers you an opportunity to apply what you have been learning about leadership to a complex business situation. It is designed to help you synthesize the leadership practices we have studied so far into informed recommendations that address the challenges presented in the case. For this two-part assignment, you will evaluate how leaders can ensure collaboration and cohesiveness among all team members. You will also demonstrate your ability to lead (e.g. appraise, evaluate, interpret, etc.), through this case analysis. Be sure to consider suggestions from your reading of Lencioni's, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team. Additionally, this case analysis should incorporate concepts and examples from the course lectures, discussions, videos, readings, and DiSC and TKI results. NOTE: Assignment 2 is broken down into two parts. You will submit Part 1 (Problem and Analysis) of this assignment in Week 7 and Part 2 (Executive Summary, Revisions to the Problem and Analysis, and Recommendations) in Week 10. Executive Summary
Some of the identified problems include a lack of trust among the team members. This often
involved team members refusing to admit mistakes and showing disinterest towards opening up.
It is apparent that a lack of trust plagued the company. Despite the availability of information,
lack of trust among the executive members marred open communication. The executive team
members got involved in second-guessing and distrusting each other. Another problem the
company faces is the risk of communication breakdown. This particularly affects daily
operations. The presence of problems automatically communicates presence causative agents.
Some of the causes of the above problems include misalignment of goals by the top decision
making ranks of the organization that led to competing priorities. Despite the efforts made by the
CEO though the incentives, misalignment continued. The company also had a team structure and
decision-making process that slowed down key processes hence creating an impact on its
business. The executive team structure barred it from working cohesively. The structure is not as
balanced as the Finance team has more power in the company. Also, the company CEO lacked
coaching skills, and it influenced some of the team's dysfunctions. Leadership styles have
different impacts on people's emotions. The leadership styles are better if used interchangeably.
The CEO does not assist in developing other people for success in the future. Since he is an
introvert, it makes it difficult to spend time with others.
All the above problems, together with their potential causes, can be solved through the
recommendations, as discussed in detail later in this report. Some of the identified
recommendations include building trust, placing emphasis on collective goals vs. individual
goals, and ensuring that the CEO plays a more active role regarding leading the team of
executives.

Introduction
The company, Blake Sports Apparel and Switch Activewear, managed to receive success
in the sports industry on a global scale. The company’s organization oversaw an approach that
propelled them to grow. Essentially, the company’s top leadership significantly impacted the
business operation through the structures they initiated. The structures guided the company
making sure it was on the right course. The company’s executive team collaborated with
employees in their run to success. The CEO undertook various changes that propelled the
company towards high achievement levels. The journey also encountered challenges that
affected the leadership’s plan. An in-depth analysis of the company reveals its success, failures,
and recommendations like improving communication and making team changes that would
significantly impact the company.

The Case: Problems and Successes
Blake Sports Apparel and Switch Activewear undertook several strategies that propelled
it towards achieving results that included success and failings. The executive team was
responsible for the company's operations. Some of their moves yielded success, like the
collaboration with other brands that included Cartlock and Howell. Some of the decisions that
they made were crucial. One of the results saw them increase their revenues. Also, challenges
included communication failures.
Dysfunctions and Risks to the Business
The first dysfunction that the company faced was the lack of trust among the team
members. From “5Dysfunctions of a Team” by Lencioni, dysfunction often involves team

members refusing to admit to mistakes and showing disinterest towards opening up (Lencioni,
5). The company faces the risk of communication breakdown that may have negative impacts on
their daily operations. The finance team never communicated with the Executive concerning the
payment of bonuses. Withholding information made team members make different decisions.
Another example from the case can be observed between the Finance department and the Sales
department. The latter did not own up to their mistake in the pricing analysis after the Finance
team raised concerns about th...
