Threats to Global Environment
There is a concern that unless humans address the multiple threats to the environment, the
intensity of natural calamities such as floods and droughts are likely to increase. While threats
such as climate change and energy sources are among the most critical, other issues such as civil
wars and cultural taboos also pose a threat to the global environment. The paper addresses
cultural taboos and civil wars as the less critical threats to the global environment.
Threat 1: Cultural taboos
Cultural taboos entail an embedded prohibition on a practice, utterance, or behavior. Each
society has its own prohibitions. Taboos related to the environment often encompass prohibition
against using certain plants or consuming certain animals due to their spiritual values. Taboos
may be imposed to safeguard the survival of communities (Adom, 2016). Taboos help
individuals to use resources sustainably. Although cultural taboos differ from one location to
another, there are some aspects of similarities concerning the use of natural resources from the
environment.
The first reason why cultural taboos are a less critical threat to the environment is
because they help to conserve the environment. Cultural taboos play a role in environmental
conservation by imposing sanctions that help to regulate how the local communities use the
