International student Campus participation 1 Table of Contents Table of Contents…………………………………………………………………… 1 Executive Summary……………………………………………………………….... 2-3 Overview/Problem Definition………………………………………………………4 Methodology………………………………………………………………………..…..5-6 Results………………………………………………………………………………. 7-10 References…………………………………………………………………………...11 2 Executive Summary The University of Tampa, located in the sunshine state of Florida, attracts students from all around the world leading to an ethnically diverse campus. For our research, we chose to investigate whether international students at the University of Tampa were actively participating in the numerous campus sports, organizations and clubs that the University of Tampa has to offer as well as analyze the difference in working students. To optimize the results of our research we had to find as many international students as we could to take our survey, all members of our group being international made this easier for us, so we shared it with our classmates and other University of Tampa students we knew that are international. Out of the 119 total participants of our survey 84% percent of them were international which was high number that could give us relevant information on international students participation. We then further broke down the demographic of of our survey participants by asking them where they are from, we found that the majority of them were from the middle east at 41% and Latin america and Europe had 13%. The first major finding of our results was that there was a significant drop in the participation of international students during their time in high school compared to their time in college. We asked students to rank on a scale of 1-5, 1 being not involved at all and 5 being Very involved, their involvement in organizations, clubs and sports during high school and during their time at UT. We then analyzed the means of these results (table 2) which showed that sports decreased from 3.45 to 2.19, Organizations dropped from 2.66 to 2.36, and clubs dropped from 3.19 to 2.11. All three of them dropped which shows that international students do decrease their participation in activities once they transition from highschool to college. 3 Our next question in our survey investigated the involvement of Students in Social Fraternities and Sororities. After analyzing our results in a cross table shown in table 4, we found that 86% of students who were international had never been part of a social Fraternity or Sorority, Only 14% had ever been. Whilst for students who were not international we found that the number was more even with 47% saying yes to being a part of one, and 53% saying no. Finally, we asked students to rank the Job finding process in the City of Tampa both within and outside the University. We asked students to rank on a scale from 1-5, 1 being extremely easy and 5 being extremely difficult, how hard it is to find a job. After analyzing the results of students rankings shown in tables 5 and 6 in the results section, we found that more students ranked it Extremely difficult Off campus than they did for On Campus this could be because international students are only allowed to work On-campus in most Scenarios. However, the majority of students, nearly 50% of students ranked the process neither easy nor difficult. 4 Overview/Problem Definition When we first started discussing our research Problem as a group, we decided to focus our research on Investigating whether there is a lack of International Student Participation In campus activities such as sports, clubs, and organizations and whether international students were having a harder time than Domestic students finding a Job both On-campus and Offcampus. What we hoped to gain by our research was that international students do need to become more active in On Campus activities, as all members of our group are international but have never been part of a Sports team or had a Job before. To investigate our research problem we would have to get as many students as we could that were international to complete our survey. 5 Methodology To collect the data for our research we created a survey on qualtrics and shared it through the university's email service to our classmates in current and previous classes as well as select students individually that we targeted who we knew were international. Total survey Participants - 119 - Year Senior- 73% Junior- 13% Sophomore- 8% Freshman- 6% - Gender Male- 64% Female- 36% - Ethnicity American- 16% Latin America- 13% Asian- 5% African- 9% Middle Eastern- 41% European- 13% Other- 3% Questionnaire For the Questionnaire we sent it through the student email. Our first question asked whether you are a student at the University of Tampa or not. If you answered No to this, the survey would end there. If answered Yes you would be directed to the rest of the survey questions asking about participation during high school and college, Job finding Process, and Ethnicity in order to get information about International students. 1. Majority of the participants we got that were international were people we knew so we were only able to target about 50-60 which is about 50% of our participants, the rest coming from a random selection of students who are in our current or previous classes. If we were able to broadcast our survey directly to a wider range of candidates for example through the international students office at UT we could have been able to get more relevant data pertaining to our research problem. 11 References
