Feature story
The human-dog affection dates thousands of years and it is only getting stronger. From
helping the early man’s hunt for food to running after sticks, humans have loved them all along
and probably, dogs love us too. Man and dog have maintained a long history of mutual
understanding. While it is true that humans have coexisted with several other animals, it is still
challenging to identify a sad cat, or a happy bird. For a dog, it is easy to tell. This in itself
suggests a strong bond that exists between humans and dogs. Humans live with cats and ride on
horses, but the relationship between these two wonderful animals is easily disengaged. Things
work differently with dogs. Once you have them, it is painful to lose them. They become family.
Arguably, like family, they support life on various accounts.
The Dec. 13, 2015 journal “Your Pet Isn't Just Cute, It's Good For Your Health” by Marie
Carter, explores the emotional benefits of human-dog affection. Unlike other pet animals, dogs
always respond to the emotional state of their human fiends. A dog will run to their human friend
when the person feels anxious or threatened. Other times, dogs will run to the owner in
excitement for just seeing them. This strong bond rarely exists between humans and other pet
animals.
Dr. Muhammed Aldossari is a veterinary doctor based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He
specializes in cats and dogs.
“If, like me you arrive home to be greeted by a licking, loving pooch, then you should
know that pets lower stress levels,” said Aldossari. “The welcoming act from the dog calms you,
takes away any anxiety and replaces it with joy and happiness.”
When dogs breastfeed their puppies and play with them, they produce oxytocin. The
chemical helps in soothing the puppies and creating a bond with the mother. In the same way,
when humans cuddle dogs, the dogs release the same oxytocin, a chemical that miraculously calms
and soothes the dog resulting in the development of a the human-dog relationship.
However, this relationship is not automatic, as it requires some training. “Interacting with
a pet requires some learning and coping in doing certain things. You have to create confidence in
your dog, play with it, come up with rules to form boundaries on what the dog can do and what it
cannot do. You have to spend time with it and care for it,” said Aldossari.
“This helps in creating an environment for the dog to learn, adapt, and cement a strong
bond with the dog,” added Aldossari.

Dogs,” scholars G...
