Description

You are a senior advisor to President Donald Trump. The President’s attention lately has been focused on his impending impeachment but even so his keen interest in domestic politics has not dulled. Moreover, the President likes to throw a curve ball now and again: in other words, he likes to surprise people—and especially the press—by suddenly focusing on an issue that no one had seen coming.

Moreover, the President likes to throw a curve ball now and again: in other words, he likes to surprise people—and especially the press—by suddenly focusing on an issue that no one had seen coming. You wonder whether the issue of sex work would interest the President. In particular, should it be legalized or criminalized? You recently read an article by the journalist Emily Bazelon on this question. And here are some other perspectives: one emphatically opposed to legalizing buying sex; the other debating multiple sides of the question. Write a memo to the President 1) laying out the debate, 2) articulating both fairness objections and corruption objections to sex work, and 3) assessing which side of the debate has the stronger arguments. Cite and briefly explain in this regard the moral theory that supports your position. Finally, 4) propose some tweets that the President might consider making to announce his position. 1

minimal. One of the main challenges when contemplating criminalization of commercial sex is
the lack of enough academic research to support decisions (Emily, 2016). There has been
inadequate literature concerning prostitution, which makes it hard to estimate how much sex
workers earn per hour or month and the impacts of their trade on their lives. There is need for
renewed effort to investigate and compare outcomes for prostitution in countries where the
practice is allowed and criminalized.
One of the most common and prevalent arguments supporting sex business relates to the
safety and health of sex workers. Proponents of sex trade insist that criminalization curbs
prostitution to a certain extent, but does not eliminate the practice. Instead, sex sellers and buyers
trade in deplorable conditions. Sex workers continue selling sex in unsafe places and remain at
risk of being trafficked, abused and mistreated by pimps because they are not protected by labor
laws. If sex work is legalized, these vulnerable people will have their rights and overcome the
stigma associated with prostitution. International and national organizations like World Health
