The LGBT families have struggled for several decades to advocate for equal rights as to
those with the heterosexual community. Family with differences in sexual orientation entails a
household where some of its members are either homosexual, heterosexual, or bisexual. The
battle for equal rights particularly in the United States has existed for several years, but potential
barriers still prevail. Potential barriers to families with different sexual orientations have
concentrated on equality in marriage. People view marriage rights as the leading challenge
affecting the LGBT community but there is more to the story than that barrier. Though the
struggles to advocate for equal rights have LED to some changes, LGBT families still face
stigmatization surrounding their sexual orientation.
Family with differences in sexual orientation faces a barrier associated with violence.
Typically, hate against lesbians and gays is still prevalent in many nations. Most of the hate
crimes in several countries occur due to protest against families with different sexual
orientations. Recently, violent offenses related to transgender have risen and trans women appear
to be the most vulnerable individuals in society (Subhrajit, 2014). The violent actions always
leave LGBT families in sorrow morning for their loved ones. All these deaths and injuries are
simply due to sexual orientation.
Besides violence, families with differences in sexual orientation face a barrier to
employment discrimination. In many countries, companies often fire LGBT individuals based on
either gender identity or sexual orientation (Subhrajit, 2014). Therefore, regardless of the
excellent qualities and work performance, people lose jobs when bosses realize their sexual
orientation. Employment discrimination may sometimes lead to conflicts as some family member
may feel other as a burden. More so, other families may find it challenging to acquire basic

needs. Employment discrimination has forced some families to hide their sexual orientation and
remain in the closet as a strategy to secure a living.
Families with differences in sexual orientation also encounter housing and healthcare
discrimination. The two barriers generally affect the living standards of these families
