Q2. Define the concepts of “New Imperialism” and “colonialism” and analyze them in terms
of motives, their methods, and their place in the development of the world economy? How
was this new imperialism different from the previous European expansion?
The concept of new imperialism implies the specific period of colonial expansion by the
European powers together with the United Nations, and japan. This happened between the 19th to
early 20th centuries. It is at this period when the overseas territories were acquired. Therefore, new
imperialism indicates the actual distribution of control through various territories over the globe.
During this period, the Europeans developed their empires majorly in Africa and Asia as well
through to the Middle East.
Colonialism, on the other hand, implies the vast policies of a nation or country that seeks
or wants to retain its authority highly above other countries' territories or people aiming to have an
economic dominance. In this case, the country that is colonizing does benefit from the other
country that is being colonized through the exploitation of its resources. Thus, it is the incident
where there are unequal relations between the colonizing country and the colony itself since there
are exploitation and acquisition of territories. Colonialism began in the 15th century which was led
by the Portuguese during the period which was called the Age of Discovery.
The new imperialism came about due to some various motives. There is the political motive
whereby the Europeans wanted to demonstrate their military strength together with superiority
which they had over other countries. Politically, the European nations had the main view of
expanding their territories. The other factor relates to the economic motive whereby the most
powerful countries in the west sought raw materials such as oil, tin as well as rubber to have control
over the countries which they wanted to conquer.

slavery through induction of moral responsibility to the primitive individuals. This was referred to
as the white man's burden. Lastly, there was the explorative motive whereby the colonizing
Europeans were eager to move and experience newer territories. In the process, they kept to
themselves whatever precious thing that they found in those areas. However, the above motives
bore rivalry among the colonizing countries on who should get what in terms of land sizes.
As well, colonization happened due to the need for political freedom where countries
wanted to have control over their resources and to even have their form of governance. There was
also the need for expansion of trade in that through colonization, there was the development of
relationship boundaries among countries that could then engage in trade and exchange or resources
mainly because the European countries had developed factories that they could only get from their
colonies. This led to the development of the economy since these countries were exposed to greater
opportunities for development.
The various methods which were used in the new imperialism and colonization involve the
use of military power over the weaker colonies. There was also a signing of a trinity or agreement
through diplomacy. Africans were also tricked by the Europeans using their appealing goods. As
well the divide and the rule tactic was used it cause disharmony among the African communities.
The major difference between the new imperialism and the European expansion is that the
European expansion allowed for the development of some local economies since ...
