Guidelines for Research Paper for EL 111- Spring 2016
Step 1 - choose your topic and have it approved! Not too narrow, not too
broad - be sure it is a question that needs an answer.
Step 2 - begin researching on your own using the library. Ask the librarians
for help. They can make suggestions, help you get started, show you books
to check out, and explain the use of the university databases.
Step 3 - conduct your own research from home. Use your computer to
access the suggested databases. Search internet sites, journals, magazines,
reviews, etc. Take notes! Use index cards if that helps you stay organized.
Be sure that you write down or copy and paste the source for every single
piece of information that you get. Include page numbers! Use quotation
marks for any exact wording. Read and take notes ONCE - do not print out
information to "get back to later". Read, take notes, paraphrase!
