Social media is a broad term that constantly evolves. When the term ‘social media’ is
heard, one may think of Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, or Facebook, but this term goes beyond
those of the relevant social media platforms widely known today. Social media refers to internetbased tools that enable people to communicate, share information and ideas, exchange photos,
data, and other content that can be exposed on the internet. There are millions of people who
have begun using social media and these numbers have increased from 9% to 73% just since
2006 (Ventola, 2014). This essay will provide emphasizes as to how social media impacts
informatics in the nursing and healthcare field. Also provided will be an in-depth discussion
concerning the accreditation decisions, quality of care, informatics, and reimbursement that
correlates with social media usage in the healthcare setting.
Hospital Policy on Smartphone and Social Media Usage
There are many risks that are posed using social media in healthcare organizations that
potentially affects the security and the safety of patient consent, information, employment
practices, physician credentials, as well as potential risks of violations concerning HCP-patient
boundaries and ethical issues (Ventola, 2014). When it concerns patient privacy, the concepts
behind this element is essential in caring for all patients. Ensuring that the privacy of patients is
protected is not only an ethical thing that the healthcare organization can do, but it is also legally
demanded. When creating policies that address smartphone and social media usage in the
healthcare setting environment, it is imperative to include privacy issues in relation to patients.
Such policies should address that no patient data or information is to be shared on any social
media platform or to those who are not in the direct care of the patient at the facility (Hebda,
Hunter, & Czar, 2019). This would include photographing patients and their family or friends, as

well as documented patient information, should always be prohibited. As anyone would be
tempted to snap a photo of a patient or access social media on their phones, phones should also
be prohibited as the staff is always interacting with the patient. Thus, any personal properties
should be locked away in a staff given locker and if staff members are expected to call someone
in the event of an emergency not relevant to the healthcare setting or their duties, they should use
their devices in designated areas only.
