Introduction
 Mental health is a vital concept amongst those incarcerated.
 This special population requires specific and in-depth understanding into their
condition in order to provide the best treatment and sentencing to reduce
recidivism.
 Examples of illnesses that an incarcerated person might experience are depression
disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or personality
disorders.
 Suicidal tendencies and attempts are a major concern among those incarcerated.

 A large majority of those incarcerated belong to this classification, and therefore,
measures need to be taken to address this specific class of individuals.

Name and Description
 The mentally ill population in prison and jail systems can be defined as
individuals that meet the criteria for at least one major mental health disorder that
disrupts their functioning and is highly distressing to the person.
 1 in 4 individuals will experience a mental illness within a given year.
 More than 40% of individuals with a mental illness have been arrested in their
lifetime.
 45% of inmates in federal prisons have a diagnosable mental health issue, 56% in
state prisons and 64% in jail systems.

 Women are more likely than men to suffer from a mental health issue.
 1 in 17 adults experience a serious mental health condition such as bipolar,
schizophrenia or major depression.

Impairment in Incarceration
 A 2009 study found that 16.7% of inmates in total suffered from severe mental
health disorders including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and bipolar
disorder
