LITERARY ANALYSIS/READER’S RESPONSE ESSAY Using MLA style, type and upload to Blackboard an out-of-class essay in which you analyze Poe’s short story, “The Tell-Tale Heart”. Make very certain to document in your paper every quote, summary, or paraphrase you refer to in the story. Read “The Tell-Tale Heart”. It begins on page 387 in our textbook or can be found on the Internet. As you read the short story, take notes. These notes may come in handy as you write your essay. Choose one of the topics for your essay:  the causes and the effects of the narrator’s insanity (madness);  how reliable or effective is the first person point of view in this story (you may want to think about the effectiveness of the un-named narrator); or  discuss what this story says about society. Your stance on your chosen topic will be your thesis statement, which you will prove in the body of the essay and support with specific evidence and analysis. The conclusion should reiterate the thesis and leave the reader with a sense of completion. Do not bring up new ideas. Because we are using only one source, the short story, I will not require a works cited page for this essay. However, when taking direct quotes or referring to specific passages in the short story, put the page number(s) in parenthesis. For example, if you take a direct quote, summarize, or paraphrase a passage from page 388, the documentation will be (388). DO NOT WRITE YOU LIKE/DO NOT LIKE THE STORY OR IF YOU BELIEVE POE IS A GOOD/BAD WRITER OR IF POE DID A GREAT/BAD JOB OF…….. DO NOT MERELY SUMMARIZE THE SHORT STORY. DO NOT DO ANY RESEARCH FOR THIS ESSAY. The analysis is only what you think or believe. If you research, you have not followed directions, and you will be guilty of plagiarism if you have not documented correctly, including not creating a correct works cited page. The typed, hardcopy of the essay is due Monday, April 25, 2016. The electronic copy must be uploaded to Blackboard no later than 11:59 p.m., April 24, 2016. Print out and turn in the receipt of the uploaded copy with your typed essay on April 25, 2016. Penalties: Not stapling or clipping the paper will result in minus five points. Not typing and turning in a hardcopy will result in a zero. Not uploading the paper to Blackboard will result in minus ten points. !NO EXTENSIONS; NO EXCEPTIONS!
