How the Following Relates To Spectral Lines and Orbital Energy Levels
Orbital energy levels
Orbital energy levels are the relative energies within the orbitals of an electron.
Considering atoms and ions with only single electron, such as H and He+, the energies of the
orbitals in any of these species with only one electron can be calculated by a slight deviation of
Bohr’s equation, which can be extended to other single-electron species by incorporating the
nuclear charge (Zumdahl & DeCoste, 2019). Generally, both energy and radius decrease as the
nuclear charge increases, and the orbital energies depend on only the principal quantum
number n.
Spectral lines
A spectral line is a like a fingerprint that can be used to identify atoms, elements or
molecules. By definition, a spectral line is a bright or dark line that in otherwise continuous and
uniform spectrum, which is a result of the absorption or emission of light in a narrow frequency
in relation to the nearby frequencies (Zumdahl & DeCoste, 2019).
In relation to the definitions provided above, we can derive and un...
