Historical and Theoretical Foundations of Transcultural Nursing
Transcultural nursing is a study of the similarities and dissimilarities of cultures
across human groups. The main element is that every healthcare professionals
especially nurse has an active contribution and motivation in the healing process of the
patients. It was in the 1950s that Dr. Madeleine M. Leininger noted cultural diversity
between patients and nurses while working with mildly disturbed children in a child
guidance center. She has observed that health professionals had lacked to appreciate
the important function of culture in healing process and in healthcare treatment
practices. It was then Dr. Leininger pointed out what were missing in nursing and
healthcare services- the culture and care. She defined that understanding and
responding properly and therapeutically of health professionals to patients with diverse
cultures will be beneficial to both of them.

Relevance of Transcultural Nursing in Addressing Contemporary Issues and
Trends in Nursing
As the years go by, there are an increasing number of international visitors that
will use the healthcare services. Along with this, there are drastic changes in nursing
environments and nursing science, a nursing specialty must also develop a global
perspective in the health practices. It is important for the health professionals to know
the specific culture care values and the way of living of the patients because it helps
patients of diverse cultures in healing and to face death. Culturally competent nursing
care shows awareness and respect of the indifference of each patient. This means to
thoughtfully and skilfully incorporate into nursing plans the beliefs and values of every
patient. As what Dr. Leininger has emphasized, beliefs and values can have greater
effect and reaction to the patient if it contradicts their ways of life passed from
generation to generation.
