Key Principles of Inclusion

Inclusive education refers to the concept of having learners with different capabilities and
of different diversity learning all under the same classroom (Hardy, I., & Woodcock, 2015). This
means that they all travel together for field trips, sports and have the same types of sports and
extracurricular activities. This concept is one that I admire and that I believe works best in a
situation whereby the teachers are well trained on how to handle the different learners based on
their capabilities and with diverse needs. Based on my personal approach I believe that schools
should be well designed and facilitated to accommodate all learners whether disabled or not, to
provide a perfect environment for the disabled for instance, who cannot use the normal toilets.
Facilities such as Braille for the blind should also be there to support them and so on (Clough &
Corbett, 2000). Practices of inclusive teaching require consciously working with students to
foster learning while considering the differences of each student. Acknowledging and
challenging how stereotypes and biases exist in the world, helps instructors build and design
their course materials so that differences are addressed within the classroom and thus, increasing
a positive learning experience for all students.
