1. The purpose of the background information
The background information provided on the first and the second paragraph provides an
overview of the whole story. The information and content in the paragraphs tell us what to
expect in the whole story. From the paragraphs, it can be inferred that there is an eminent
of death in the story, “…the cemetery where the odor of death was already attracting
vultures…” (Allende, 1989). The details provided in the paragraphs prepares the reader for
a sad story ahead.
2. Rolf Carles traits.
a. He is friendly. He remained with the narrator up to dawn when the station was called
before down. He had to say goodbye to the narrator before he left.
b. He is caring. The narrator indicates that he was preparing for long hours without Rolf
Carles meaning that he had really shown a lot of care for the narrator (Allende, 1989).
c. He is hardworking. By the use of the advantage of the television copter, he emerged
the first to reach the scene and he reported the best of himself (Allende, 1989).
3. He needed protection from his emotions as it appeared that he was not really courageous
as it had been depicted by his nature in reporting on the television. He, therefore, could
have been overwhelmed by fear of the events he was reporting.
4. In paragraph 7, Rolf realized that Azucena was not the only person who had been trapped
by the collapsed walls of the buildings but also her brothers and sisters. More realization
was that her brothers and sisters were already dead as she said her legs had been held by
their bodies (Allende, 1989).
