Select an issue from the following list: bullying, unit closers and restructuring, floating, nurse turnover, nurse staffing ratios, use of contract employees (i.e., registry and travel nurses), or magnet designation.
Describe the selected issue. Discuss how it impacts quality of care and patient safety in the setting in which it occurs.
- Discuss how professional standards of practice should be demonstrated in this situation to help rectify the issue or maintain professional conduct.
- Explain the differing roles of nursing leaders and nursing managers in this instance and discuss the different approaches they take to address the selected issue and promote patient safety and quality care. Even though the field of nursing is more professional than it was in the past, some
unprofessionalism, such as bullying still exists. Bullying involves behaving in ways that seek to
coerce, intimidate or harm others in the professional setting. Bullying affects the victims
negatively because they are subjected to the pain of doing or feeling bad about themselves. Nurse
bullying has adverse effects on the safety of patients as bullied nurses are affected emotionally
and may be unable to function normally. It is the role of leaders and managers to ensure that
cases of bullying are prevented and they are handled professionally when they happen.
Nurse bullying may lead to a reduced quality of care. Nurse bullying leads to nurses who
are victims are being psychologically hurt. Bullying comes in various ways. For instance, it may
come in terms of physical means and lead to the nurse being injured and therefore not being able
to perform their tasks. In other cases, nurses may be intimidated and forced to overwork by their
seniors and thus become fatigued (Giorgi et al., 2016). Other nurses may tell their peers things
that are insulting, racist or otherwise not pleasant leading to them being stressed and emotionally
strained. Nurses, just like other people, are affected by emotions. When they are stressed or
depressed, they may not be efficient and therefore may put the safety at patients at risk. Bullying
