Research Interview: The Role of the Family in Educational Achievement This assignment is designed to give you experience conducting a research interview. It focuses on the role that the family plays in shaping people’s educational hopes and aspirations, and in providing the support that people need as they pursue their education. For this assignment you will conduct an interview, analyze your findings, and write them up in a 4-6 page paper. A social science interview is a type of conversation, but unlike everyday conversations, it is structured and organized, and is designed to gather information on a particular topic. Unlike a survey, which asks a fixed set of questions, an interview typically asks open-ended or semistructured questions that are designed to explore the interviewee’s experiences, attitudes, and beliefs in depth. A. Family background and influences: Explore the interviewee’s family of origin and the ways in which their family influenced and provided support for their educational plans and aspirations. Possible questions include: Tell me about the family you grew up in. We were pretty average family growing up. We all swam, played piano, I did violin. Pretty healthy, we ate together for dinners all the time, always food, support of the parents. We were expected to do well though but I think that's average. Who raised you? Were other relatives important in your life? My mom and dad raised me, but my aunts and uncles on both sides were always around. My aunt and uncle on my dad’s side was important in my life because they were the ones who took Amy and I out all the time for dinner or movies and still do. What was their education? [identify last year of school completed] My dad was a civil engineering for the city of San Jose. He retired. And my mom is a software engineer for a company in Silicon Valley. She went to grad school. He didnt. How many people were in your family? Including me 5, then my mom's mom stayed with us when I was 17 and 18 Did you have siblings? [if so] What has been their educational experience? Amy is 22 and she has a psych degree from Santa Clara university. And brandon is 14 or 15, gonna be a junior in highschool. What were the family expectations about education? It was expected of us to go get an education and to do well in school but they’re offering to pay for grad school so says a lot about their dedication to my education. Where you expected to go to college? Absolutely. Who in the family expressed those expectations most strongly? How were the expectations expressed? e.g. where you told explicitly? Did you just get a sense? My mom mainly was the one who told us to get the education. Usually by yelling at us and nagging us about keeping grades up. In elementary school, who (if anyone) helped you with your homework? How important was it in the family to regularly do homework? My mom helped me with homework. Extremely important. It took precedence over all B. Educational plans and aspirations: Explore where the interviewee is now in his/her education, and their future plans. How far along are you now in school? I am a junior in college approaching my senior year of undergrad. Do you plan to continue toward a further degree? [if so] What are your plans? Yes I'm planning on going for my masters in public health. When did you decide to go to college? More or less grade school? It was always like when family friends came over and they'd be comparing their kids to me with my parents and it was always they're going to college. Who was the biggest influence on you in deciding to enroll in college? No one in particular. Maybe for myself because it was the first adult decision I made. Were any family members or family friends influences on you? Probably just my sister and parents. How did you get a sense of the kind of career you wanted to pursue? First in physical therapy it was because I thought it was something I liked, especially cause it was athletic. Then public health because I want to make a difference on a larger scale but still in the healthcare field. Who was the biggest influence on you in developing that interest? I say my psych professors at Arcadia like Dr fortune and Dr brown who really helped me. When growing up, did you know anyone who had that type of job? Not until Amy got her job at kaiser family Foundation so I was a senior. She works with a group that's helping to end the stigma on HIV. C. Educational history and experience Tell me about your school experience. Where did you go to elementary school? Where to high school? What was your school experience like? Chadbourne elementary then John Hopkins Jr high then mission San Jose high school in fremont california. I grew up at schools that were predominantly asian so it was strange having the asian culture always around me but living in california being white. When you needed help with school, did you have someone to turn to? We had a tutor during Jr high and school prep classes that my parents paid for. What has your college experience been like? It's been pretty great. Been more independent being so far away from home Have your ideas about job and career changed since you enrolled in college? [if so] What helped to change them? Yes it has. I was so mindset on pt for so long but then changed after I realized it wasn't right for me and school has helped me realize there are different ways to help the world. FAMILY INFLUENCES ON EDUCATION.
Education interests, desires and dreams hail from deep within us and in most cases family has a
supreme and unending influence. The interviewee is from bay are in California and currently
resides at Glenside PA and attends Arcadia University. He is a 21 year old Asian, a junior, who
works for the school doing a work study life guarding positioning.
Family influence on education is a substantial concept as it covers as the prevalent factor in
education interests. From the interview, the 21 year old Asian has brought out on how his family
had a major influence on his education. First, the togetherness and unity strength in his family is
breath taking. This can be more described as the family structure. He talked of how his family
spent most of time together and eating dinners all at once. A family that is united and creates
time for each other is bound to succeed. This motivates and encourages the interviewee as it
gives him something to look up to. A happy family inhibits confidence and peace of mind
prompting immense concentration and success in education. A family that lacks unity, on the
contrary, tends to trigger and invite problems and small dysfunctions here and there. Statistics
show that a family going through a divorce has a high chance of damaging their children
emotionally compared to one which is held tight.
Family income and wealth certainly influences the education of interviewee. This has a got huge
impact on the education experience of the participant. A family with access to abundant
resources also tends to have an eye on an educative community because of their capability. This
