Chamberlain College of Nursing

Description

This is the initial post that I need a response for

When one thinks of Florence Nightingale the image of the ‘lady with the lamp’ comes to mind (https://florence-nightingale.co.uk/, n.d.). Many of our nursing schools had ceremonies around the lamp to honor nurse Nightingale and remember her significance to the nursing profession. One thing I did not realize was part of nurse Nightingale’s legacy was her contribution to nursing education. Nightingale believed that nursing education would “raise nursing to a respectable endeavor by clarifying standards for professional and personal conduct and standardizing how nurses provided care for the sick” (Judd & Sitzman, 2014). Nightingale established the Nightingale Training School at St. Thomas Hospital in 1860 based on her principles and other schools were established based on her example in numerous countries (Attewell, 2010). To this day nursing schools reference and teach the importance of nurse Nightingale’s principles. She is considered the mother of modern nursing and the standards she set forth.
