CASE STUDIES (PRESENTATIONS) - Guidelines • Case studies will be soon assigned (Canvas). • 10 minutes presentation with PowerPoint slides. • Each presentation is based on a case study from the textbook. All case studies are related to current financial/banking issues or concerns. It is highly recommended to read other articles on the subject to receive a higher grade. • Students must let me know ahead of time if they wish to reschedule their presentation (a valid reason must be given). • You can include a short video (less than 2 minutes) to explain or illustrate key concepts. • You can send me an email or pass by my office to discuss if you encounter any issues or concerns. • Do not forget to include in your PowerPoint presentation: ✓ A title slide (case study’s title, students’ name, course number) ✓ Definitions and/or explanations of concepts, theories or models. ✓ A reference slide (using APA format) • You must submit your ppt presentation on Canvas before class. • The presentation will account for 15% of your final grade (30 points). How to get an A ✓ Don’t read your notes too much, speak up, use your hands and make eye contact with your classmates. ✓ Make sure the slides are easy to read (fewer words is best, illustrations are welcome). ✓ Interact with your classmates during or after the presentation (e.g. Discussion question, Kahoot, Short quiz). ✓ Use several sources (articles, graphs, etc) and don’t forget to reference them at the end of your presentation. Are We Headed for Cashless socie Predictions of a cashless society have been around for decades, but they have not come to fruition. For example, Business Week predicted in 1975 that electronic means of payment "would soon revolutionize the very concept of money itself," only to reverse its view several years later. Despite wider use of e-money, people still make use of a lot of cash. Why has the movement to a cashless society been so slow in coming? Although e-money might be more convenient and efficient than a payments system based on paper, several factors work against the disappearance of the paper system. First, it is very expensive to set up the computer, card reader, and telecommunications networks necessary to make electronic money the dominant form of payment. Second, electronic means of payment raise security and privacy concerns. We often hear media reports of an unauthorized hacker who has been able to access a computer database and alter the information stored there. Because this is not an uncommon occurrence, unscrupulous persons might be able to access bank accounts in electronic payments systems and steal funds by moving them from someone else's accounts into their own. The prevention of this type of fraud is no easy task, and a whole new field of computer science has developed to cope with such security issues. A further concern is that the use of electronic means of payment leaves an electronic trail that contains a large amount of personal data on buying habits. There are worries that government agencies, employers, and marketers might be able to access these data, thereby enabling them to encroach on our privacy if they choose to do so. In conclusion, although the use of e-money will surely increase in the future, to paraphrase Mark Twain, “the reports of cash's death are greatly exaggerated."
