Introduction
Offering culturally sensitive and competent care is an essential part of patient centeredcare. Appreciating the cultural background of the patients is very important in maintaining good
rapport and a healthy nurse-patient relationship. When cultural information of a patient is valued,
they are energized or motivated to express themselves and share their health and medical
background. Therefore, Nurses must always strive to provide quality and patient-centered care
by respecting the patient’s values, cultures, and beliefs. This paper explores ways a nurse can
demonstrate to a client and his or her family that their cultural information is valued.
Valuing Cultural Information of a Client
At the onset of the interaction, a nurse should ask a client (and the family) about their
ideas of illness and wellness as well as their view on alternative approaches to care/healing. In
other words, how she or he wants to receive the care. When a client is sharing his or her view, a
nurse should record them either in written form or video form. By asking the client about their
ideas and alternative approaches to healing, clients are made to believe that their cultural
