CSR-Issues and dilemmas

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is the obligated measures for decision makers to take in
consideration, all aspects which improve and protect the welfare of both the society and the
organization. This means every decision made by the business attracts social implications. However, it
would be safe to claim that CSR cannot be applied in similar way across different markets. The Hindustan
Lever company faces the dilemma of meeting the social demands of the Indian woman, as the company
deals with the largest skin lightening cream in the region; Fair & Lovely. Transparency can sometimes fail
to gel with the perceived target audience, and moral issues are out into question as to whether the
advertisements are sounding racist and discriminating to a particular race (Donaldson, 2006)
Responsibility in making money
In a country where spirituality takes the center stage, Indians have the history of attaching higher value
to integrity. Although historically the fairness of the woman skin was desirable, the perception has since
changed owing to the pressure being applied by human rights advocacy agencies, in a bid to promote
equality indiscriminate of color and race. The market place issue of Hindustan Lever Ltd (India’s largest
cosmetics and home applicants) have since caused a stir in the media, with human rights groups,
particularly led by the All Indians Democratic Women Association)AIDWA, voicing their concern over
advertising which seems to breach the moral values of the Indian people.
