Running head: AIRPORT PROTESTS IN HONG KONG Airport Protests in Hong Kong Student name: Course name: Date: 1 AIRPORT PROTESTS IN HONG KONG 2 Findings from the Hong Kong protests The Anti-Extradition Law Amendment bill fuelled the Hong Kong protests since it championed for the inauguration of the Fugitive offenders Amendment Bill by the government of Hong Kong (Al Jazeera,2019). These developments led to the demonstrations in Hong Kong by thousands of demonstrators who barricaded roads and paralyzed the transport connections to the Hong Kong airport to ensure that they capture global attention to the quest for democracy in the Chinese governed city facing a major upheaval in years. The motivation for targeting the airport was to ensure that foreigners read about occurrences in Hong Kong. The protests, which had begun as peaceful demonstrations with an exchange of words between protestors and the angry travellers, took a violent turn when the demonstrators and the riot police in the evening (Al Jazeera,2019). Armed police forces were forced to apply force and use pepper spray as they clashed with protestors at the airport, leading to the suspension of flights after protestors blocked the departure section. It is reported that the demonstrators began the use of violence when a woman was injured in protests and may have lost an eye as they continued erecting blockages leading to further violence with many protestors being arrested as the protests persisted Al Jazeera,2019). The various dimensions of the Hong Kong Protests The Hong Kong Airport protests were primarily focused on grabbing the world's attention on what was transpiring in the nation, particularly with regards to the Fugitive Amendment Bill. During the protests, the protestors gave the international visitors fliers written in the Japanese, English, Korean, and French language giving reasons for the protests from the perspective of the demonstrators (Li, & Ives,2019). Another dimension was rooted in the frustrations of the Hong Kong citizens, whereby they felt lied to, and they felt the government did not act in their best interests. The young people who are the main propagators of the protestors indicated they are living in harsh conditions, and they thought AIRPORT PROTESTS IN HONG KONG 3 they have lost ownership of their city both in the political and economic perspective (Li, & Ives,2019). The frustrations were depicted in their demands, which was inclusive of the cancelling of extradition bill, inquiry regarding police cruelty, and getting global suffrage for Hong Kong Citizens. Moreover, the protestors were fighting for other aspects like freedom and democracy, and culture. Lastly, the Hong Kong airport is one of the biggest financial capitals in the world contributing to 5% of the Hong Kong GDP and hence, the protestors felt that demonstrating in the airport would be safer since the authorities would prioritize the interests of the tourists and also it is one of the biggest assets of Hong Kong (Li, & Ives,2019). Findings and Reflection The real-life case brings about various aspects of globalization, and one of them is the rise of technology in which the protestors specifically target Hong Kong airport one of the busiest financial hubs in the city, knowing that they will attract global attention to what is happening (Class Lecture 1,2019). Through social media, the protestors have posted images on various social media websites to garner support towards the course and moreover to recruit more people on the places and when they would conduct their protests (Regan,2019). Another aspect is that the Hong Kong airport has established itself as one of the most prominent global financial nuclei and the best getaway to China, therefore, the protests barricading the airport posed various consequences for corporations by tarnishing the corporate image and delaying transport of cargo to other nations. With Hong Kong depending on the tourism sector, various nations like the United States, Britain, Ireland, Singapore, and Japan began issuing warnings to their citizens traveling to Hong, telling them to be very cautious in light of the current protests particularly at the airport (Regan,2019). The occurrences of the Hong Kong protest, particularly in the airport protests, bring to light the impact of globalization in the current world, particularly aspects of technology, AIRPORT PROTESTS IN HONG KONG commerce, and politics (Class Lecture 1,2019). Hong Kong is one of the world's biggest financial hubs, and therefore, it becomes imperative that the breakage of protests will surely grab global attention and even lead to the crippling of crucial activities, particularly in the airport (Class Lecture 3 and 4,2019). Social media makes information dissemination rapid and ensures comprehensive coverage of breaking news can easily be achieved, impacting greatly on the dimensions championed by the protestors in terms of social, cultural, economic, and political aspects (Class Lecture 3 and 4,2019). 4 AIRPORT PROTESTS IN HONG KONG 5 References Al Jazeera.
