1. What is primary memory? What are the 3 characteristics of primary memory?
Primary memory is also known as the short-term memory. It is a place, which stores the
information for a short time until the finalization of the decision about the retaining or forgetting
the information (McLeod, 2009). The information that we want to retain is stored as the
secondary or long-term memory and the information that we do not want to retain, we forget it.
The characteristics of primary memory are forgetting, coding or retaining the information.
Information from the memory is forgotten through decaying or interference of the new learning
with the past learning through retroactive interference and interference of the past learning with
the new learning through active interference. Primary memory codes the information
semantically, visuospatially, and acoustically. Semantically means primary memory store
information by creating their meaning, visuospatially means it saves visual information and
acoustically means it saves sounds. Primary memory can retain information for ± (5-9) digits and
a person can remember 7 items at one time that shows it limpidness (Willingham, 2007).
