One aspect of my personality that
I believe is more influenced by nurture than by nature is
my high level of openness to experience. From my experience and readings, while some
personality traits have a somewhat stronger genetic correlate, such as aggressiveness, the
degree to which somebody is opened to experience is likely more influenced by nurture, that
is, by environmental factors. My opinion on the development of this psychological trait is
probably best explained by the integrative,bio-psycho-social- perspective. In the following
paragraphs I will explain my reasoning.
First of all, I believe that there is likely no psychological trait that can be fully
explained by nurture, or at least no personality trait. However, it seems that some traits have a
higher degree of genetic inheritance than others. Openness to experience is probably a
personality trait that is more influenced by nurture, or the environment, because it is a trait
that correlates with attitudes, and attitudes are strongly influenced by social factors. These
social factors include culture, family, friends, and any other social element that is or has been
part of an individual’s life. In my case, I believe that the social factors that have most
strongly influenced my personality as one opened to new experiences was my family. I was
