Chickenpox and smallpox are diseases that affect children. Chicken pox is a mild illness
that is prevalent mostly in children. It is an infectious disease that is characterized by mild fever
and skin rashes that are itchy and swollen. Its pathogen is herpes zosters virus that mainly attacks
children, but once they are attacked, they become immune to subsequent infections. The impact
of the disease varies from one child to the next since some kids develop only a few spots while
others develop spots that cover their entire body. The disease affects the face, ears, chest, arms,
legs and scalp majorly. Smallpox was an infectious disease that is caused by Variolar major and
Variolar minor viruses. The pathogens normally attack the mouth, small blood vessels of the skin
and throat before spreading to other parts of the body. The disease causes a maculopopular rash
on the skin that changed to fluid-filled blisters.
The primary objective of this essay is to systematically discuss the general characteristics
of the virus (structure and replication characteristics) that causes chicken pox and smallpox, how
the virus is transmitted, symptoms and prevalence of the diseases, particular anatomical site and
or cell type infected by the virus, pathogenesis of illness and type and mode of action of the
immune system (type of antigenic determinant involved, involvement of the cell-mediated
immunity, involvement of the NK cells). The essay also analyzes the impacts of the viral
infection of the two diseases and whether such infections result into cancer, the vaccines that
could be used to control the two diseases, general treatment regimen and recent advances in the
diseases.

The virus is composed of four parts; the envelope, core, capsid, and tegument. The
envelope is the outer covering of the virus. It consists of lipid bilayer and glycoproteins that bind
to the receptors of the host cell to create a path for the virus to access the body of the host. The
next layer is tegument that is made up of viral...
