Eliza Lab ITEC 423 In this lab we will examine an Eliza-like chat program written in python. This particular chat program is very limited in conversational skills, but can surprisingly still have interesting conversations. Recall that Eliza was designed to respond in a similar fashion as a psychologist. Run the python program and evaluate the source code. For each response pairs, modify the code so that this version of Eliza can have more interesting conversations with the user. Be sure to turn in your source code, along with answers to the following questions by June 23rd 11:59pm. You will need to justify your answers to receive full credit. 1. Did your view of intelligence chat programs change after interacting with this particular program and evaluating the code? (Why or why not) 2. Do you think that more elaborate chat programs that can parse complex sentence structures are more intelligent? 3. Thinking back to the Turing Test, do you feel that such a test that deals with conversation is valid in determining “intelligence”? 4. Looking at Expert systems, where such programs are much more elaborate, and include a large set of data, (think about Watson like systems as well) or connected to the Internet. Does your view change? Are Expert Systems more intelligent than chat program? 5. When running your program, were there any unexpected responses? (Explain) 6. What changes did you implement in your version of the program? Part 2: Go to pandorabots.com and create a free chat bot. Chat with your program. You may have to train your bot for a better response. 7. Would you recommend a program like this for your website? Explain 8. Would you feel differently if your program was linked to a “face” or virtual character? 9. What strengths / limitations does your program have?
