Conflict Management in Corporate America
Introduction
Conflict management is one of the most difficult things in modern companies. Part of the
reason for that is the fact that modern companies are very large, they are divided, and they are
often filled with silos, roadblocks, and circles that lead them to dead ends. When there is a
problem or an issue, things are no longer as easy as they were in the past when there was one
head and one boss who would be able to provide an instant answer about any issues that might
arise. Now there has been a change in place of the one boss who would provide an answer, in an
instant.
Now since there has been a rise in the power of different social groups, individuals and
protected classes, when there is a conflict it is handled in different ways. We are going to look at
how this has changes in America over the past 100 years and see how resolution has been
effected by the rise of civil rights, collective bargaining, and the changes that have taken place
over the charted years.
We are also going to look at the ways that the world has changed for those who in the
past had limitless power and when companies were run more like autocratic regimes than any
kind of real resolution process which has completely changed in the past years.
As environments become more and more diverse there will be a greater need for
corporate understanding as well as the trajectory of changes with protected groups and modern
companies.
Questions We Will Examine:

CONFLICT RESOLUTION

3

1. How have the rights of the worker changed in the last 100 years?
2. How has decision making processes in companies changed in the past 100 years?
3. How have workers’ rights played a role in the change of conflict resolution?
4. How do labor unions play a part in the changes that have happened over time?
5. How is it that the changes have really made a difference in the process of bargaining?
6. When did worker’s rights’ become a real issue?
7. How are women and other protected classes becoming a consideration for companies?
8. How are the changes making a big difference in the timing and the work that is being
done for everyone?
9. What is the difference in a corporation and a labor union?
10. How did the industrial revolution play a role in the history of the country and its labor
force?
11. What does the labor force of the future look like and how will it shift and change?
12. How will changes effect the differences of opinion that are coming to the future?
My Literature Review and Plan of Attack:
My plan of attack for the project is rather simple as I will look at all of the evidence and
analyze the positions to ensure that there are many options that will be available for the paper
and look at how all of the theories are strung together in the historical narrative.
Method of the Paper:
The method will be to simply analyze the narrative of history and to see the way that
there have been changes in the role of the worker throughout time and how all of the various
movements have played a part in the evolution of change as well as of the evolution of the
country

The History of the Worker and the History of Conflict Resolution:
In ancient times, when there was a conflict, there would be a fight that would happen
often in the form of single combat among one side of each party, this was deemed to be the most
logical and the most human method of dealing with a conflict since it would save the destruction
of towns as well as the destruction of the lives of many people who had been in peril for a life
time. What that meant for the people who were fighting was that if they won the fight all of the
people who were under them and in their towns were also safe.1 This is also the reason that
people formed towns and coalesced behind a leader who was able to make decisions for the
entire town or state depending on the size of the location. This was the way of life for men until
the rise of feudalism in the Medieval Ages.

With the rise of Feudalism, all of the workers simply reported to the lord of the land who
also had a lord. There was a very clear chain of command. This same system was replicated in
the American south in the new world with the use of the slaves in order to farm the land and to
work at the hands of their masters. There came a very large change in things when there were
factories that were born and that popped up all over the American north, and textile mills that
became a very present thing in the south. In those factories, men, women, and children labored
away for hours on end with no one to check on their rights or to make sure that they were resting.
At this time there was no department of labor, there were no rules against children laboring for
hours and there were no safety standards. What that meant was that children, women, and men

were being worked almost to the point of death and that there were many people who were
injured who simply never recovered.

These children who were workers, labored 7 days per week for minimum wages, at the
time though, that was one of the most difficult things because there was no such thing as
minimum wage and there were no standards. Many of the journalists of the past began to become
very appalled when they were entering some of these factories to speak to the Magnates of the
American Industrial Revolution, these are some of the most famous names of the times that were
not treating their workers properly. It was a new brand of journalist called the Muck Racers who
went into all of these locations and decided that it was time that the public knew what was going
on. They started capturing all of the images of the children working and also of the dangerous
conditions that were everywhere for the workers. At this time there were no rights for workers
other than there was a paltry wage that they were paid and they were able to barely afford a roof
over their heads or a place to sleep.

The Muck Racers became some of the most feared journalists in the world because they were
actively working to shine a light of truth into what was happening to the youth and all of the
workers who were slaving away in these conditions. There were many factories and bosses who
declined to give interviews as corporate greed was coming out in the open for the first time for
the entire world to see.

The nation who was reading all of the posts of the writers was horrified and all over the USA,
Europe, and Canada there was a very strong labor movement is which people unionized for the
first time. There was a party for the workers.2 The unions were created for each respective area
of work such as auto union, entertainment unions, and also other unions for each main trade.
Then there were bosses who were appointed to assist with the communication between the
employees and the union. When there was an issue, there would be a process by which the
employees would work with the union to set up some kind of resolution with the employer. If

there was no way that there could be a resolution that was reached, sometimes this would mean a
strike by the workers who would simply cease production until their demands were met.

What Did the Rise of the Labor Unions Mean for Companies?
There was a huge change in the way that large bosses were looking at their workers.
Some chose to continue to try and find ways to treat workers as slaves and simply belittle and
harass all of those who were not in compliance with their culture and took my way or the
highway approach. Other bosses realized that there was a better way and they started to ensure

that there were new standards of cooperation and wages for workers.3 Men like Henry Ford
decided to believe in the power of progress and the ideas of the worker. He surrounded himself
with those he trusted and promoted all people based on the quality of their work. Ford paid good
wages, provided comfortable housing, and assured that everyone on his staff had a very specific
function. He was quoted as commenting, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is
progress; working together is success.” Ford believed in the power of the worker and did all he
could to ensure that there was a quality life for...
