If 7.O mL of a 6.O M NaOH are diluted with water to a volume of 400mL, what is the molarity of the resulting solution?

solution

number of mols of a substance in any solution = (molarity)(volume) - if the volume is in dm-3

number of mols of a substance in any solution = (molarity)(volume) / 1000 if volume is in cm3

therefore 1a)

mols = (7)(6) /(1000)
= 0.042 mol

1b) molarity = number of mols / Volume (convert all volumes to dm-3 before using this formula)

molarity = (0.042) / (400/1000)
= 0.105 mol dm-3
