Abstract

The intensely competitive business environment across the world means organizations are
constantly seeking ways to maintain market share, remain competitive and meet or exceed
stakeholders’ expectations. Management of these organizations may be forced to downsize its
workforce as a means to achieve both his tactical and strategic corporate objectives. The reasons
for layoff may include theft, poor performance, and violation of the policies, procedures and
standards among others. The process of downsizing can have traumatic effect on both the exiting
and surviving employees especially the line manager or supervisor that is given such an
assignment (De Vries 1997). These managers are usually at a crossroads between their
commitment and responsibilities to the company and the colleague.

The process of dismissing an employee is quite challenging and should be handle with
utmost care and professionalism. The process may become emotionally tensed if there is a longtime professional relationship between the manager executing the layoff and the subordinate who
is being laid off. Psychologists claim that process of downsizing usually causes managers so
much discomfort that majority use avoidance and aloof behaviors as coping mechanism. The
situation is exacerbated when the manager does not fully understand the reasons for the layoff.
Apart from the manager, the layoff process may also have negative effects on the surviving
employees’ emotions (Bies 2013). Management of organizations that undertake layoff, do so
because they are convinced the process will improve organizational performance in achieving
business results through increased employee productivity. However, the emotions generated as a
consequence of the process may be counter-productive to this objective if not properly managed
as emotions drive workers behavior, which in turn drives results.
Ways that a Manager Can Cope with any Negative Emotions that May Accompany an
Employee Layoff

cope with the negative effect of layoff.
Face-to-Face Communication
This communication method is the most effective under this circumstance as it helps to
create an atmosphere of trust among all employees. By so doing the manager will be able to
explain in clear and concise words the reasons for the layoff. Communication also helps to dispel
