PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY OF NURSING

Introduction
Growing up, I wanted to impact people’s lives positively, and therefore, choosing nursing
as a profession was fulfilling to the core. Pushed by the innate nature to care for other people, I
was aware that nursing was a profession that would allow me to provide care to vulnerable
populations in their times of need. Nursing is also a profession that would enable me make
significant contributions to society through advocating for health promotion, educating patients,
and providing support. As I have attained the relevant education required to be a nurse, I want to
be a nurse who is looked up to because of knowledge, experience, and competence. I am guided
by a personal philosophy that comprises of beliefs that I feel are important to the profession. This
philosophy is an individual concept that has integrated many character traits, traits, beliefs,
principles, and values that I use in practice. In this paper, I will be discussing the essence of
nursing, my beliefs, values, and vision for the profession using the core models of Watson’s
theory of human caring.
I believe that the nursing practice is both an art and science since it is derived from
scientific, sociological, and psychological disciplines. The goal of the nursing practice is to help
people, families, groups, and populations to achieve an optimum state of wellness by restoring,
sustaining, and promoting health. The role of nurses in practice is to provide excellent patientcentered care since they are the front-line authority on patient care (Fritz, 2018). My nursing
philosophy is about empathy, integrity, and culturally sensitive to patients and their families.
This philosophy is guided by Watson's Caritas process and covers the four concepts of the
nursing metaparadigm: person, environment, health, and nursing. Jean Watson, a nursing
theorist, developed the philosophy of caring by stating that people cannot be treated like things,
and they cannot be alienated from personality, nature, and the broader workforce.

Within the nursing metaparadigm, a person or client is the recipient of the nursing care,
and this includes patients, individuals, groups, families, and population. My delivery of nursing
care is guided by Watson's theory, where I perceive a patient and his family as a valued
individual who needs to be understood, nurtured and assisted to full recovery. Integrating the
Caritas process in patient caring, I have developed and sustained therapeutic relationships with
patients because I believe that positive patient outcomes require the collaboration between the
two stakeholders. Secondly, I follow a holistic approach to provide care that will heal the patient
as a whole. This approach enables me to meet the physical, spiritual, cultural, and emotional
needs of the patient. I also value the patient’s family because they play a significant role in the
care and after hospitalization (Fritz, 2018). They are an integral part of the treatment process
because they collaborate with providers to give the patient’s health information as well as utilize
instructions from physicians to address the needs of patients.
The environment as a nursing paradigm focuses on the internal and external settings that
affect a patient. Components of the environment include physical surroundings such as friends
and family. In my practice, I am guided by Watson's teaching that nursing is a humanistic
science that provides solutions to illnesses through professional, esthetic, scientific, ethical, and
personal human care transactions. I demonstrate these beliefs through solving problems in the
nursing environment where I use the self and artistry of the caring process. When dealing with
patients, I strive to control the negative influence of the environmental factors on the health of
patients. I advocate for and implement environmental principles into my professional practice
and role to assist in eliminating problems that may be caused by environmental factors.
As an experienced and competent nurse, I identify health as the unity and agreement
within the soul, mind, and body. The concept of health is linked to the level of harmony between

the perceived self and experienced self (Watson, 2006). As a student of Jean Watson, I recognize
that nursing is a selfless profession that necessitates one to provide excellent services that
guarantees patient quality health. Therefore, I sometimes stay late to help incoming nurses to
transfer responsibility and accountability to the next nurse. I ensure that I have transferred
successfully to the next nurse who may not know the patient by ensuring that the process is
linked to the continuity of care and patient safety. In my practice, I prefer giving the change-ofshift report in writing because the process gives the next nurse easier time in making references.
All these activities are tailored toward maintaining the patient’s health.
Lastly, nursing is a concept that has enabled me to show empathy and pay attention to the
patient’s feelings. As a holistic nurse, I am guided by core values and beliefs that create behavior
and act as the foundation of decision-making. Since nursing is a profession engrained in ethical
values, I observe core values that include autonomy, altruism, honesty, and human dignity.
Through these values, I have formed a humanistic-altruistic system that has enabled me to
practice self-control within the context of providing care. As an altruistic nurse, I am open to
connectedness with my colleagues and the environment, recognize the vulnerability in patients,
respect others, and model self-care in patient service delivery. I believe that caring entails
knowing and trusting the patient. As a caring nurse, I am aware that I do not know every detail of
the patient, and therefore, I project the confidence and patient when helping the maintain hope.
Watson's theory guides my philosophy because she emphasizes that nurses are drawn to
the profession since they believe in the positive impact of human caring on health outcomes. She
also focuses on relationship management that is essential to patient engagement and the
interactions with the family of the patient (Watson, 2006). With the increasing concerns about
economics in the healthcare sector, it is often challenging for providers to allow nurses to take

time to develop therapeutic relationships with patients. However, Watson provides core concepts
that I have incorporated into my beliefs that should guide nurses in their delivery of care to
patients. These concepts include identification of many ways of knowing patients, having caring
moments, demonstrating a reflective approach to care, inclusive caring, and recognition of the
patient's environment and cultural groups (Watson, 2006).
The essence of nursing is founded on offering compassionate care for patients. Through
the act of caring, nurses are required to demonstrate genuine practice and proper communicable
relationship with patients (Fritz, 2018). Jean Watson applied the concept of compassionate caring
through the Caritas process that promotes a holistic practice of care. Watson believed that a
nurse’s role is to create a compassionate relationship with patients by engaging and
communicating. This therapeutic relationship promotes trust between the patient and the nurse.
The Caritas proce...
