Reading one, “House as a Symbol of Self”
The first reading, "House as a Symbol of Self" by Marcus (1974), reveals that people
invest in homes that resemble their traits as human beings. The home designs that people select
or come up with define who they are. According to Marcus, the home designs act as a symbol of
the self. I do agree that the values that an individual behold portray the kind of lifestyle that
he/she selects. The lifestyle, in this case, would be reflected in the type of housing that a person
chooses to live in. I believe that what an individual dreams, such as getting a good house, this
conveys the subconscious thinking of the individual. In the current trends, new technology and
high-end innovations have become the norm in almost every context, such as buildings, clothing,
and cars, among others. As such, people will always go for something that uplifts self-image. I
have seen individuals going for authentic designs for their upcoming homes to not only portray
their self-image but also create an impression. In consequence, this allows one to show
independence, self-esteem, freedom, and self-identity. Based on a theoretical perspective,
Freud’s psychoanalytic theory conceptualizes that the unconscious mind reveals the suppressed
thoughts that resurface through the outward behavior of an individual (Frosh, 2012). The dreams
