You are a database consultant with Ace Software, Inc., and have been assigned to develop a database for the Johnson Video Store in town. The owners have been keeping their records of videos and DVDs purchased from distributors and rented to customers in stacks of invoices and piles of rental forms for years. They have finally decided to automate their record keeping with a relational database.

You sit down with the owners to discuss their business and watch their operation for about a week.     2. Retrieve all of the customers' names, account numbers, and addresses (street and zip code only), sorted by account number
    3. Retrieve all of the DVDs rented in the last 30 days and sort in chronological rental date order
    4. Update a customer name to change their maiden names to married names. You can choose which row to update. Make sure that you use the primary key column in your WHERE clause to affect only a specific row.

The Database Life Cycle defines the phases involved in implementing a database and
comprises of several phases beginning with requirements analysis and finish with monitoring and
modification. The life cycle never ends since monitoring, modification, and maintenance
activities persist after the database has been implemented.
The phases in the database life cycle include initial study, logical design, physical design,
implementation and lastly monitoring, modification, and maintenance phase. The first three

and labour-intensive phase of the Database Life Cycle (Connolly & Begg, 2015). The phase
entails assessing the information requirements of a business so that a database is created to meet
those requirements. The main purpose of the initial study of the database is to analyze the
business situation, describe problems and constraints, describe objectives and define the database
scope and boundaries.
Database Design Methodologies
A design methodology helps the database designer in planning, managing, controlling
and evaluating database development. The conceptual model enables the designer to know the
entities and the relationships between them. The logical data model gives data description to the
physical phase while the physical database model enables the database designer to decide on how
the database is implemented (Valacich & George, 2018).
