Abstract
Managing employee’s workflow and productivity in the workplace is currently a priority
for many employers. Employers and managers want the assurance that they are getting value for
their money by having employees perform all the required tasks as per their job description. For
this reason, among others, there are control measures that managers can use to monitor the
workflow, productivity, and performance of their employees. The purpose of this paper is to
determine the effectiveness of the control systems and their practicality in the workplace. For
this analysis, I provide a detailed account of the external control system as used in my
workplace. I review the reasons that may have influenced the choice of this strategy over other
options. The analysis also provides some pros and cons I have witnessed from my manager’s
selection of the external control system. I looked into its development and implementation in the
sales department where I work. The paper provides real-life examples of the workings of the
external control system and how its application has affected employee motivation and
commitment or hindered it. In addition to this, this paper also reviews nine key characteristics
that make control systems useful. There is an analysis of the selected external control system
using these key features. The study will provide the reader with a deeper understanding of the
use of the external control system in light of these characteristics. The results of the study show
that the external control system is highly effective in the sales department of the firm. It
motivates employees to achieve organizational, departmental, and team goals. The control
system, however, does not foster commitment among employees, and it is challenging to
encourage intrinsic motivation. The results also show that the described nine essential
characteristics are significant contributors to the effectiveness of a control system, and their
exclusion has adverse effects on the productivity and job morale of employees.

in their performance by receiving rewards. At my workplace, where I work in the sales
department, rewards are commonly given when we as employees perform well by attaining and
superseding the set goals. During these times, we can receive a wide range of rewards, which are
financial or non-financial. The type of bonus given by my manager depends on the overall
