Question 1. Explain how the human traits of bipedalism and the possession of opposable
thumbs distinguished hominids from other Mammalia
The Hominidae members consist of modern and extinct great ancestors who
had the same characteristics. The group consists of eight species in the taxonomic family. The
species lived from 2.6 million years ago when their distinguishable traits of upright walking
and opposable emerged (Goldstein, 2015, Pg. 4). These features separated them from their
previous Mammalia, who walked on four limbs. Before, the evolution, the four limbs were
required for locomotion and climbing of trees.
During evolution, human-faced challenges and was required to carry food. They
traveled long distances to hunt for food, which was becoming scarce as environmental
changes occurred (Ko, 2015, Pg. 931). Unlike in the previous periods, they had to adapt to
running during hunting. It resulted in the evolution of the body to equip them with the ability
to run, have a vision of far distance. A study showed that the evolution of standing reduced
the surface area of the body that was exposed to direct sunlight. The adaptation enabled them
to survive in the savanna environment.
The bipedalism enabled the hominid to walk upright and also run faster than
while moving on four limbs. The skeletal changes differentiated the Homids from their
previous species since the vertebral column straightened and became s-shaped (William and
Russo, 2015). Further, the pelvis emerged into a bow sha...
