Civility in the Workplace

To preserve mutually respectful norms, some behaviors must be ensured, and when these
behaviors are guaranteed, then it can be said that workplace civility exists (Woodworth, 2016).
An example of behavior that depicts workplace civility is a concern for fellow workmates
(Lachman, 2015). The opposite of civility in the workplace is incivility, as Lachman (2015)
asserts, which entails impolite conduct. In this article, the focus is on civility in the workplace,
given the video presented between a nurse leader and a member of staff known as Masaya.
Masaya explains that he moved from the Philippines, having been taught some standards that did
not apply upon moving to the United States for work. The other staff seems not to readily accept
him, having been corrected for using words such as ma’am, and for beginning the report for his
patients with their surnames instead of their first names. In this article, therefore, the leadership
skills that I could use to ensure acceptance get described, and a discussion on incivility also gets
described. The common themes for Lachman’s (2015) article, the video and the civility index get
explained, and the issue of delegation is discussed.
