Collaboration and Leadership Reflection Video
Introduction
As most organizations are focusing on attaining a common goal, collaboration among
different departments is increasingly becoming a fundamental practice (Sullivan et al., 2015).
Collaboration can be defined as a practice of two or more different teams working together for a
common goal while at the same time taking care of the experience and expertise of others (Sullivan
et al., 2015). It is very common for healthcare professionals to share responsibility, assume a
common role, make a common decision, and work with cooperation to eventually improve the
patient's wellbeing.
Strategies for Managing Human and Financial Resources
Ineffective collaboration among healthcare teams could amount to poor health outcomes.
Healthcare professionals who are unable to work as a team with others may not be in a position to
deliver their role and thus they add less value to an organization (Nester, 2016). In most case, a
team which is unable to work in unity is characterized by lack or morale, frustration, decreased
productivity, limited resources, and ineffective communication. Such as a team cannot conduct a
meeting to deliberate something successful (Nester, 2016). A less motivated team in an
organization is likely to underutilize or over-utilize available resources as they are not united by a
common vision.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration Experience
I am a cardiac nurse in a busy med-Surg floor. I attend the diverse need of patients who
require special care and monitoring. This unit often works in unity to provide good care and
promote both the patient's health and recovery process (Sullivan et al., 2015). In the last fear years,

this department has encountered various challenges such as healthcare-associated infections,
limited resources, medication errors, and readmission. As an active member of this department, I
have experienced both the negative and positive facets of interdisciplinary collaboration. Lead by
a chief nurse, the team developed evidence-based intervention to counter healthcare-based
infections in our department and the organization as a whole (Nester, 2016). The provider of care
who formed this collaboration include surgeons, nurses, medical doctors, physiotherapists, social
workers, and dieticians (Sullivan et al., 2015). The collaboration worked on conjoint respect
despite being defined by members with different expertise. However, the performance was not as
expected as the leader did to assign clear roles to the members.
Best-Practice Interdisciplinary Collaboration Strategies
Collaboration is found on the assumption that shared skills, practice, and knowledge from
a different professional can improve the decision-making process (Sullivan et al., 2015). Team’s
ability to work together and achieve a unified goal greatly relies on the existence of a common
goal towards which every person will aim. It is, therefore, necessary for a team leader to devise
goals and objective which will unite the team (Sullivan et al., 2015). All members of a team should
be assigned roles depending on their experience and work on mutual respect regardless of their
expertise and age brackets. Additionally, the organization must create an environment that
encourages teamwork.
Change Management Theories and Leadership Strategies
In any organization, the teams are motivated to achieve their goals when assured of
independence. A delegation leadership strategy also known as Laissez-faire leadership is the best
strategy in pioneering interdisciplinary collaboration (Pollack & Pollack, 2015). In this strategy, a
