Introduction
The phrase African aesthetic can be defined as African appreciations and perceptions
of value, nature, and beauty of artistic representations or expressions of African origin
(Dapena-Tretter & Pelton, 2018). It is embodied in African practices and embedded in the
plurality of African cultures within their lived African societal contexts. It is directly associated
with and draws from the diverse spiritual, religious, cultural, historical, environmental, or
geographical experiences of Africans. Therefore, it is an important element of the intangible
and tangible cultural heritage of African people that concurrently reinforces their cultural unity
and affirms their diversity. African aesthetic offers symbolic representation that communicates
what it means to be an African to generations to come in Africa and other parts of the world.
In the diaspora, most Africans have preserved some of their traditional aesthetic elements that
are portrayed in their artworks, music (dance and song), ornamentation, hairstyles, and dress
