What is the basis for depressive disorders according to cognitive theory?
Depressive disorders are mental conditions that interferes with a person’s thoughts and
feelings. Cognitive theories suggest the depression results from distorted thoughts and judgments
in the mind of a person (Clark & Beck, 2010). The models have long posited that several thought
processes are involved in the development and recurrence of depressive episodes in a person. As
a result, a person will develop a depressed mood from negative cognitions and underlying
schemata. In essence, depressive disorder according to cognitive theory arises from a person’s
belief and thoughts as opposed to their behaviors (Clark & Beck, 2010). The assumption is that
changes in a person’s thinking precede the onset of depression when they develop negative
