Description

Overview:Democracy allows/requires broad participation of a citizenry in order to work properly. One of the main themes of the course is to view the US political system critically. Despite the ideals espoused by the Founders in the Constitution, the current reality is that US democracy is being challenged by a whole host of factors. Some would say US democracy is in decline and some would go further and say the US is no longer an effective democracy.

Your goal will be to take a problem solving approach to the challenges facing US democracy today. You will explain how it challenges democracy. Then you will provide a solution and explain how it can restore/re-invigorate democracy in the US. You will give a step-by-step plan for achieving the goal, using what you have learned in class.

First step: Identify a problem facing US democracy

Second step: Research potential solutions

Foreign Interference in US Elections
Historically, election interference by an external nation always produces devastating
political deformations on the democracy of the affected country. The 2016 Russian interference
in US elections had an unprecedented negative impact on the outcome of the presidential
election. The manipulation of the American electorate through social media propaganda and
computer hacking to reveal classified emails poured water on the democratic integrity of the
United States (Ohlin, 2018). The solutions to foreign interference in US elections include
asserting a retaliatory policy against foreign countries meddling in US elections, creating a
robust agency to deal with potential cyber security attacks, and passing the Honest Ads Act to
block foreign election funding and regulate expenses and content in political advertisements.
Foreign Election Interference and why it is Problematic the US Democracy
Election interference is problematic to the United States because it denies the citizenry
their democratic right to choose leaders and introduces the risk of foreign manipulation in critical
foreign policy decisions by American leaders. The United States is the world’s most powerful
nation whose democracy has been an example to others for many decades (Power, 2018).
