Module 5 Essay
In 1903 the following famous poem by Emma Lazarus was engraved and placed upon the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. Think about this poem’s message. Did immigrants’ experiences reflect the hope and promise of this poem?

The New Colossus
By Emma Lazarus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Analysis of the New Colossus
The author of the poem, the New Colossus, begins by describing the statue of liberty as a
symbol of freedom. The poem seeks to pass the message of universal freedom for all immigrants
visiting the United States. The immigrant mindset depicts a high level of optimism in moving to
a country with the promise of liberty and a better life. The author presents a group of immigrants
coming from countries plagued by poor living standards, broken political systems, and limited
development opportunities (Otero 94). Moreover, a substantial number of immigrants decided to
run for personal safety as exiles to America after differing with their governments back home.
The author refers to the United States as the mother of exiles meaning that it provided a home for
the homeless and refuge for those escaping social, economic, and political suffering (Gale 4).
Initially, the immigrants did not experience the poem’s promises of a country with better living
standards and satisfaction, but progressive changes to the governance system of America made it
possible for some immigrants to participate in the good life detailed in the promises.
Meaning of the poem
The author of the poem, the New Colossus, intends to use the sonnet to describe the good
life awaiting immigrants in America. The poem differentiates the land of promises from the
Green empires, whose main concern was to conquer the entire world and keep everyone under
their rule. The third stanza exhibits the United States as a welcoming calling it a sea-washed
sunset with open gates for every immigrant to enter (Lazarus n.p; Mollica 9). The description

also reveals the free nature of life in America, considering that no one gets prevented from
seeking a better life regardless of the social, economic or political background.
