Introduction
When children experience learning disabilities such as speech and language disorder,
their learning may be affected. Learning disabilities are not associated with the environment
disadvantages or emotional disturbance, but they have been associated with uneven pattern of
development. This uneven developments such as in physical developments and language
development presents difficulties in child reading skills, comprehension, spoken language,
mathematics, writing, and reasoning abilities. Experts have estimated that in United States, 610% of the school-aged population is learning disabled (Child Development Institute, 2020).
This research paper provides a discussion of the speech and language disorder experienced by
children, considering when a child communication can be said to have delayed, characterization
of the disorder, effects, and how pathologists help in addressing it.
It has been observed that children learn how to communicate in different times and
sometimes parents find themselves struggling to determine if the child has a language problem or
is a late talker. A child can be considered to have a language delay if he or she misses language
development milestones by larger margins. Children are regarded to have delayed
communication if they have difficulties in communication which are unusual for their age.
Following is the communication development stages that can be used to provide clues of a child
communication delays. The first stage to consider is 12 -15 months, where by the age of 12
months, a child is expected to have started using their sounds or voices in different forms trying
to communicate. They also should be using gestures when they want something or needs help.
