Just as gangs pose a threat to law enforcement agencies in free society, Security Threat Groups (STGs) pose a threat to the security of an incarceration facility for correctional agencies. The same individuals that are members of gangs in free society comprise the membership of a STG in prison. In your initial response, define what constitutes a STG in an incarceration facility. Next, discuss the reasons why inmates that were not part of a gang in free society may decide to join a STG while incarcerated. Security Threat Groups refer to either formal or in other case informal groups that are
formed among inmates. In other words, these STGs are prison gangs. The name STG is used to
eliminate the fact that gangs actually exist in incarceration facilities. These STG are a real threat
not only to fellow inmates but to incarceration officials as there increase in number threatens the
management of the incarceration facility as they are almost impossible to manage (Maghan,
2000). These STG vary from one incarceration facility to another with some being formal, large
as well as highly structured and a real threat such as the Aryan Brotherhood to others being more
informal and less promiscuous such as the Texas Mafia...
