After reading the first chapter of the assigned reading, several differences between
business communication and ordinary/everyday communication were identified. First, major
differences arise in the definition and purpose of the two forms of communication. While
ordinary communication is simply an exchange of information, business communication is
defined “as a problem-solving activity” (University of Minnesota, 2015). In business
communication, one must think about the context, effective communication strategies that best
fit the context, a course of action, the design of the selected message, and a means to deliver the
message. As such, business communication required critical thinking in order to achieve
optimum outcomes. The purpose of business communication also differs from that of ordinary
communication. While the former should have a clearly defined purpose, the latter may not need
any purpose at all. For instance, ordinary communication facilitates the exchange of information
