Based on your research and understanding, complete the following tasks:

  • Identify five leaders of today, one of each of the following styles:
    • Charismatic
    • Transformational
    • Visionary
    • Transactional
    • Servant
  • For each chosen leader:
    • List and describe the characteristics that made you select them.
    • Identify and define the contemporary leadership style they employ.
    • List and explain the major characteristics of the contemporary leadership style. Explain with examples.
    • Explain if this style is effective or ineffective for the leaders you've chosen.
    • Define emotional intelligence including the five components of emotional intelligence, its relationship to successful leadership, and whether your selected leaders have it or lack it.
    • Explain each leader's situational leadership capabilities. Give an example where they demonstrated their situational leadership capabilities.
    • Select one of your chosen leaders to be your manager, and explain why you chose that leader.
  • Suppose you are a leader in a healthcare industry, which is facing fast and immediate change. Which of the contemporary leadership styles do you believe are best suited to healthcare leaders to manage that change? Why? Explain using concepts and theories learned in the week.

Charismatic – Barack Obama
Barack Obama is the 44th US President whose charisma as leader has touched the hearts
of many not only in America but all over the world. I chose Barack Obama as a charismatic
leader due to his revolutionary and inspirational nature that has been evident throughout his
tenure as a president. Obama has good communication skills. His extraordinary oratory skills can
influence anybody listening to him to follow his vision. In addition, he is very articulate,
supportive and has a high degree of self-confidence that is often evident whenever he engages
with people out there or when he appears before a crowd. He has an unusual ability of drawing
people to his side and invoke them to embrace his vision, a factor that was very evident
especially before he was elected during his first term as a president. He wooed many Americans
and foreigners alike to his vision of changing America as a president (President Barack Obama's
Leadership Styles, 2016).
Transformational leader- Mark Zuckerberg
Mark Zuckerberg is seen a transformational leader. He introduced a new kind of
corporation that focused on the stakeholder engagement and social good. His idea of Facebook
has managed to create immense value through the power of social media. Started as a social
platform, Zuckerberg transformed Facebook into a giant enterprise that has succeeded in
navigating the ongoing evolution of social networks and has enabled people to move beyond
information sharing to solving complex problems in more diverse and creative ways in real-time
(Services, 2016).

Visionary leader- John Mackey
For him, vision, brand and product integrity are always one and the same thing. He is a
renown visionary business leader of today. As a co-founder and CEO of Whole Foods Market,
John Mackey had a vision of growing the company and helping to end poverty in developing
nations. He has led the business to become a very successful company and is even ranked in the
Fortune 500 companies with several stores in three countries. He further became the founder of
the Whole Planet Foundation an organization that works towards eliminating poverty in
developing nations.
Transactional Leader- Sir Alan Sugar
Sir Alan Sugar is a very good example of a transactional leader. A former chairman of
the famous Tottenham Hotspur football club and a business leader for the popular TV program
known as apprentice, Sugar is a well-known transactional leader who is good at motivating his
employees and rewarding them if they meet the requirements and equally punishing them if they
fail to meet the threshold for performance (Styles, 2016).
