Netflix’s use of Cloud Computing
Netflix is the biggest online streaming movie and series delivery service provider in the
world, and it has reached its current heights of growth by leveraging cloud computing
technologies to improve its efficiency and gain competitive advantage. Netflix used cloud
computing to increase its presence in the world and protect its databases from corruption and
other issues related to the physical storage and delivery of DVDs as it did earlier when it started
(Fagerjord & Kueng, 2019). Cloud computing helps Netflix maintain over 86 million customers
with minimum disruptions or delays. Before cloud computing, Netflix had noticed that its
scalability was limited and that its materials were not safe. Therefore, Netflix introduced the use
of cloud computing to store and reach its customers around the world to improve scalability,
reduce costs of operation, and avoid issues of corruption and data disruption.
Cloud Computing
To understand how Netflix used cloud computing to benefit itself and solve the
challenges that already existed, it is important to review the meaning of the term cloud
computing. Cloud computing is a term that refers to a methodology of storing data and
information on the internet and accessing the shared tools of resources or services over the
internet (Fagerjord & Kueng, 2019. Apart from storage, other services that cloud computing may
involve include networks, servers, editing and accessibility of the stored information on the
cloud. Cloud computing is used by both individuals who may have relatively small amounts of
data and organizations that may have terabytes of data. For instance, storing data in the google
drive is a smiling example of cloud computing. Backing up data as well as the recovery of the
phone data, Webhosting and other services fall under cloud computing albeit in smaller scales
(Erl, Mahmood & Puttini, 2014).

Netflix

Netflix is among the biggest content providers in the world that work in more than 190
countries in the various continents of the world. The provider delivers content to its users over
the internet instead of cable, as is the case with many content providers. Netflix conveniently
offers popular content and subscribers register for free and pay for the content they watch per
month. Apart from the delivery of content such as movies, television series and documentaries to
the viewers, Netflix also participates in the production, distribution as well as in television
production of some of the content it shows and sells to other content providers such as television
(Sim, 2016). When Netflix started in 1997, the company’s business model was the delivery of
DVDs by mail to subscribers. However, the company soon started focusing on the rental of
DVDs to the subscribers who paid the rental fee. The company moved to the streaming business
in 2010, even though the DVD and Blu-ray retail business remained (Sim, 2016). The turning
point of Netflix to cloud computing was the 2009 database corruption that crippled the company
for several days leading to the need to find a more sustainable solution to its business model that
was becoming obsolete.
Challenges Faced by Netflix
Netflix moved to stream in 2010. However, before then, as already established, Netflix
rented DVDs to its customers. Therefore, it faced a range of challenges in its business that
needed solving until cloud computing came. 2008 was the turning point of the company when its
