“As I sat down at a coffee shop in the chilling evening waiting for a friend of mine to
join me later in the evening, my eyes darted across the street as I slowly sipped my warm
coffee with the caffeine in it making me feel lively. Across the street, my eyes rested on a
small crowd stationed at a corner of one of the Backstreet buildings. I could not help noticing
smoke emanating from the crowd. Since I was not new to the streets, I knew that the group of
young and elder persons was smoking cigarettes.
A person smoking cigarette always makes me wonder why they do so since I do not
see any pleasure in swallowing and puffing out smoke. As I watched the crowd mumbling
inaudible words I wanted to know what was going on through their minds. I could not help
wondering; did they know how harmful cigarettes were to their health? Did they ever think of
abandoning smoking? Why does the country not ban tobacco?
There are two types of cigarette smokers, the active smokers, and the passive
smokers. Active smokers normally are the ones who smoke cigarettes intentionally while the
passive type of smokers inhale cigarette smoke unintentionally when they are near the active
smokers. I sat there debating alone whether cigarette smoking should be outlawed in the
country.
Throughout my childhood, I had known some neighbours who were cigarette
smokers. I lived with them all my life. Whenever we could meet and greet each other, I could
not help but notice the discoloration of teeth and their yellow fingers.one or two clothes they
use to wear had burn marks on them. Cigarette smoking was the primary cause of this since
the smoke they inhale taints their teeth and thus discolouring them. The yellow fingers came
from the burns from cigarette ends. In rare occasion do you find smokers engaging in
conversation, since their mouths sting when they open them? These is disgusting to others,

and it typically makes them feel uneasy whenever they are at a full place and cannot give
their opinion on certain issues even if they had great ideas.
As I sat there at the coffee shop, I could clearly see the group gradually increasing in
number. I could even see that there were women who were clearly pregnant in the group. I
wondered if they knew how much risk they were putting their unborn babies. The nicotine
usually contained in tobacco is always harmful to foetal development and can even cause a
miscarriage to the mothers who at times might even result in the death of the mother. I sat
there wishing that the government should ban the use of cigarettes.
Still waiting for my friend to show up and idle enough to concentrate on the smokers
group. I saw one of them toss a remaining piece of cigarette to the wall. The cigarette was
still burning since the guy who threw it had not put it off. It was fortunate since it was chilly
at the time because the cigarette burnt out and went off
. In other circumstances if the cigarette was tossed out and found dry wood or paper it
could have easily caused fire and wildfires are always destructive. I wondered whether the
group knew how much they were risking their health. I had seen many people diagnosed with
lung cancer due to cigarette smoking. Many of my friends who were smoking addicts had
mouth cancer and throat cancer. It is common for an individual who has cigarette addiction to
have dry lips most of the time.
I use to ask one of my best friends why he liked smoking cigarettes, yet he knew how
harmful smoking was. He could narrate to me how by him buying a cigarette from a shop he
was building over country economy since the money he paid will be used by the tobacco
company to pay tax to the government. I am quite aware that some communities like the
native Americans us tobacco for a religious ritual which makes me wondering what will

happen if the government decides to outlaw the use of cigarettes, where will such
communities find the necessities for their rituals.
Also, as I sat at the window looking at the group I could see as they joked and
laughed heartedly. I thought it will be unfair for the government to outlaw smoking since
maybe stopping such an act will affect a ...
