Social movements and revolution are often used in the same context to refer to change.
However, the meaning of the two words is significantly different. Revolution is a violent
organization whose agenda is overthrowing the present government and changing the political
system of a country (Dickovick, & Eastwood, 2015). On the other hand, a social movement is an
organization formed with the objective of bringing social change in society. In this regard, a
social movement is concerned with the enlightenment of mass. A social movement follows an
ideology. However, a revolution does not follow any ideology. The most significant difference
between the two organizations is the use of violence. Primarily, revolutions use violence. For this
reason, considerable bloodshed occurs during revolutions (Dickovick, & Eastwood, 2015).
However, social movements happen peacefully. In this regard, there is no bloodshed that is
witnessed. Because of the rigorous nature of revolutions, significant change happens. Certainly,
the change caused by revolutions affects the whole society. Nearly every country has ever
witnessed a revolution. This is especially when those countries were pursuing independence. For
instance, the American Revolution led to the independence of the United States. The sequence of
this revolution can be explained using revolution theories.
American Revolution
The American Revolution was a war against the British colonialists. Before this
revolution, the United States was divided into several colonies. This was to facilitate the efficient
administration of the British colonial rule. Americans started protesting against the British

government. They claimed that the British government was not responsive to their needs
(Dickovick, & Eastwood, 2015). Furthermore, they were not adequately represented in the
