Summary of Article The authors of the article explained that, ZIKV is named after the Zika Forest of Uganda where the virus was first identified. It was first detected in 1947. Since then, a number of cases been reported: 1968 in Nigeria, 1951-1981 from various African countries and from different Asian countries, 2007 ZIKV outbreak on Yap island in the Federated States of Micronesia, 2013 outbreak in French Polynesia, 2012- 2014 in Thailand, and in May 2015, Brazil reported the first ZIKV case that’s has become a global threat today. In the 1st of February, 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared public health emergency due to the number of microcephaly cases of more than 4,000 identified in the ZIKV-infested places (Teixeira et. al, 2016, pg. 123-124). Female Aedes mosquitoes is the main vector of ZIKV and is communicable through sexual intercourse, blood transfusion and mother-to-baby transmission during pregnancy. Majority of the individuals who are infected with the virus are asymptomatic making it difficult to identify the infection. The infection can only be detected by complicated diagnostic test. In a country like Brazil, access to health care especially for the pregnant women is limited, making it impossible to detect the virus promptly that could have prevented more fetuses/ infants micro cephalic cases. Our fight against the ZIKV is still not over as there is no single vaccine available ARTICLE REVIEW CONCERNING ZIKA VIRUS 4 in the market. People should restrict from travelling to ZIKV susceptible places. Use repellents, wear long clothing, and remove stagnant water. Research on ZIKV is still ongoing. Experts have no precise information to combat the infection. One must take precautions to lessen the chances of getting the infection. The article reported that in the US, there are 52 cases of travel-related ZIKV disease and, Zero case of mosquito-borne ZIKV infection (Teixeira et. al, 2016, pg. 127). Significance to Course Content and Global Health The article is significant to the course content and global health because it addressed the existing global fight against ZIKV virus that threatens the health of the entire world. The article discussed the most recent update on the case of the ZIKV where the Health care workers must learn to be vigilant, stay informed with the most recent studies, must be keen enough to watch for signs and symptoms of the infection, and properly follow the preventive measures so we can help educate the community in order to combat the infection successfully.
